His arrest sparked immediate unrest—hundreds blocked roads with burning tyres, and violent clashes ensued as security forces used tear gas and live rounds. In a dramatic escalation, some protestors draped themselves in petrol and threatened self-immolation. Concurrently, a delegation of over 20 MLAs from BJP, NPP, and Congress met Governor Bhalla to press for the unconditional release of Arambai Tenggol members. The Governor assured them of action and convened a high-level security review involving top officials. Despite his sophistication, talent, and international praise while representing India, the party’s cold treatment and public criticism of him—especially while he is abroad—appear misguided and poorly timed. This attitude not only undermines Tharoor but also makes the party look petty and foolish in the eyes of the public. Instead of attacking him, Congress missed a chance to boost its own stature by publicly supporting Tharoor and highlighting his achievements as proof of the party’s irreplaceable role in Indian politics. By praising him and gently taunting the rival BJP, Congress could have gained respect and political advantage.
