Astronomers have observed a star swallowing a gas giant planet, Jupiter-sized or larger, in a one-off event about 10-15,000 years ago. In a preview of the fate of our own solar system, the red giant star had engulfed the close-orbiting planet, resulting in an outburst of light followed by a long-lasting stream of dust shining brightly in cold infrared energy.
