The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday called Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal the “kingpin” of a “liquor scam” in the national capital, even as deputy CM Manish Sisodia, who has been named an accused in a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, said the onslaught was a result of the BJP politically fearing the Aam Aadmi Party’s national gains.

The central agency on Friday carried out searches at Sisodia’s residence and at several other locations, a month after Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena recommended an investigation into the AAP government’s effort to bring in a new excise policy, citing a report from the chief secretary that alleged rules were ignored in the drafting of the policy.

Excise policy ‘best’, says Sisodia as BJP pins blame on Kejriwal

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday called Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal the “kingpin” of a “liquor scam” in the national capital, even as deputy CM Manish Sisodia, who has been named an accused in a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, said the onslaught was a result of the BJP politically fearing the Aam Aadmi Party’s national gains.

The Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22 was the “best” of its kind and would have earned ₹10,000 crore every year had the former lieutenant governor not been “asked” to change his decision at the last minute, Sisodia said on Saturday. Read more.

THE BIG QUESTION

Why has the DGCA suspended the licences of two pilots?

Three months after some passengers were injured due to turbulence on a SpiceJet flight from Mumbai to Durgapur, the aviation regulator has suspended the pilot’s licence for six months for ignoring his co-pilot’s warnings. The pilot was additionally found to have reacted late to the turbulence, worsening the situation, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said.

In another case, DGCA suspended the licence of a pilot of a charter airplane in a false fuel emergency case for one month. On October 19, 2021, the pilot of a charter plane from Bokaro to Ranchi had falsely declared low-fuel emergency to get priority landing as he wanted to avoid hovering period. Read more.

THE SPORTING LIFE

Cricket: For club and country

When fast-bowler Trent Boult announced that he was opting out of New Zealand’s central contract earlier this month, he was widely criticised for choosing money — in the form of franchise league cricket — over country. It’s a narrow way of looking at a situation that could very well become a highwater mark for international cricket.

From here on, a change is coming. Cricket is that rare team sport that has been fuelled, so far, by the fervour of nations competing against each other, rather than clubs. Most other major team sports, including football, basketball and baseball, are defined by club culture, with the focus shifting from club to country only when a major tournament is played, at most once a year, and in some cases once in four years (as with the football world cup).
