Bhishma knew that a person does not attain salvation when the Sun is dakshinayan and he has to take birth again in this mortal world. After the Mahabharata war, when the sun turned Uttarayan, then Bhishma Pitamah gave up his life. The Nirvana day of Bhishma is also called Bhishmashtami.
According to a religious belief, on the day of Sankranti, Mother Ganga descended from heaven and followed King Bhagirath to reach Gangasagar via Kapil Muni's ashram. After descending on the earth, King Bhagirath offered his ancestors with the holy water of the Ganges. On this day a grand fair is organized on the banks of the river Ganga Sagar.
