About 16,000 Indian citizens are stranded in Ukraine, mostly students. Friday was the second day of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. About 2,500 of these students are from Gujarat and 2,320 from Kerala. These students are studying medicine in Kharkiv and Kiev. The families of these students present in India are worried amidst increasing tension in Ukraine. At the same time, many state governments have requested the Center to make immediate arrangements for their safe evacuation.
The Tamil Nadu government estimates that around 5,000 students and migrants from the state are stranded in Ukraine. The state announced that it would bear all the expenses related to the return of the students. Around 1,200 students from Maharashtra and 100 residents, including 70 students from Chhattisgarh, are stranded there. Gujarat Education Minister Jitu Vaghani said Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel is in touch with the Center to ensure the safe return of around 2,500 students stranded in Ukraine.
Madhya Pradesh Home Secretary Gaurav Rajput said that the parents of 87 students stranded in Ukraine have contacted the Chief Minister's helpline for assistance. While the number of residents of Goa stranded in the war-torn country Ukraine is not immediately available, the state's Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has written to the Center seeking help in their safe return.
Around 600-800 students from Rajasthan and about 130 students from Himachal Pradesh are also stranded in Ukraine. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to take necessary measures for the safe return of the people from the state. At the same time, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said that around 2,000 residents of the state are stuck in Ukraine and need to be evacuated. According to the information received so far, about 85 residents of Uttarakhand are trapped in Ukraine.
Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has written a letter to Jaishankar urging the central government to make immediate arrangements for the safe evacuation of Indians, including residents of Punjab stranded in Ukraine. The Karnataka government said that 346 residents of the state are stranded in Ukraine and Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that he has requested the External Affairs Minister to make necessary arrangements like food for the stranded students.
The Telangana government urged the Center to arrange special aircraft to bring back students from the state stranded in Ukraine and said it was ready to bear the entire travel cost of their evacuation.
Concerned over the safety of thousands of Malayalees, especially students stranded in Ukraine, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly V D Satheshan wrote separate letters to the External Affairs Minister, demanding their safe return.
Around 170 residents of Andhra Pradesh and eight residents of Puducherry are also stranded in Ukraine. Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to rescue the students trapped in Ukraine.
Around 1,500 students from Odisha are also stranded in Ukraine. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to ensure their safe evacuation. Most of them are pursuing medical courses at National Medical University in Kharkiv and Kiev Medical University.
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang said his government is coordinating with the Center to bring back 20 students from the state stranded in the crisis-hit country. While many states have given their estimated figures of their residents stranded in the Eastern European country of Ukraine, smaller states and union territories have not done so.
Plans are underway to evacuate these people safely, senior government officials said, adding that Air India is planning to operate two flights to the Romanian capital Bucharest on Friday so that Indians can reach the Ukraine-Romania border by road. citizens to be brought back.
