Arrest warrants were issued in the US for both Gautam Adani and his nephew Sagar Adani, also the executive director in Adani Green. The Adani Group strongly denied the allegations, calling them “baseless” and vowing to “seek all possible legal recourse”. “This indictment alleges schemes to pay over $250 million in bribes to Indian government officials, to lie to investors and banks to raise billions of dollars, and to obstruct justice,” stated Lisa H Miller, the deputy assistant attorney general for the for the US Justice Department’s Criminal Division, according to a statement. The ministry of external affairs (MEA) on Thursday strongly dismissed a Canadian media report that suggested Prime Minister Narendra Modi may have known about an alleged plot to kill pro-Khalistan terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, terming it as part of a “smear campaign”. Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail cited inputs from an unnamed senior Canadian national security official to suggest that foreign minister S Jaishankar and national security advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval were also aware of the alleged plot. Nijjar was shot dead outside a gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, in June 2023. Responding to media queries on the report, spokesperson of the external affairs ministry, Randhir Jaiswal, said that such “ludicrous statements” should be dismissed with the contempt they deserve.
