As Vinesh Phogat returned to India and made her way from Delhi’s IGI airport to Haryana, there were tears, there were drum beats, there were showers of flower petals, and there were politicians.

With the Haryana elections around the corner, the political undercurrents were palpable at the wrestler’s roadshow. With Rohtak MP Deepender Hooda perched on top of her SUV and his MLAs and ticket aspirants felicitating her at various stops, it was pretty much a Congress show. BJP leaders were noticeably absent. The Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) is in the throes of a meltdown. Within hours of the Election Commission announcing Haryana election dates, party MLA from Uklana Anoop Dhanak’s resignation landed in the WhatsApp messages of top JJP leaders and the WhatsApp groups of Haryana journalists.
