Wayanad MP and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi faces an imminent threat of disqualification after a court in Surat on Thursday held him guilty of criminal defamation for a remark he made ahead of the 2019 national polls about the Modi surname.

Gandhi was convicted under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which provides for imprisonment of up to two years, and later released on bail. The court suspended the sentence for 30 days on Gandhi’s plea.

Wayanad MP and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi faces an imminent threat of disqualification after a court in Surat on Thursday held him guilty of criminal defamation for a remark he made ahead of the 2019 national polls about the Modi surname.

Gandhi will have to appeal to a higher court and get a stay on the conviction to prevent the disqualification – something the Congress party said it will do – even as the Lok Sabha Speaker’s office awaits a copy of the court order to take the next step. Read more.

California might become the first American state to ban caste-based discrimination after a lawmaker introduced a bill on Wednesday that added caste as a protected category to the state’s anti-discrimination laws, the latest in a string of moves that have spotlighted caste in the United States.

TN assembly readopts bill against online gambling

The Tamil Nadu assembly on Thursday passed the bill to ban online gambling for the second time in six months after governor RN Ravi sent it back earlier this month, questioning the state assembly’s competence to frame a law on the subject.

“I stand in this House with a heavy heart. 41 people have died after losing money in online gambling,” chief minister MK Stalin told the assembly on Thursday as he asked the assembly to pass the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Online Gambling and Regulation of Online Games Bill again. The assembly first passed the bill on October 19, 2022. The governor didn’t sign off on the bill for months and eventually on March 6, 2023, returned the bill. Read more.
