Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned following a ruckus over Rahul Gandhi’s remarks about democratic backsliding in India during his trip to the United Kingdom (UK) last week as the second half of Parliament’s Budget session resumed on Monday.

Opposition Congress members reacted sharply to the government’s demand for an apology over Gandhi’s comments, which led to the adjournment of the proceedings of Lok Sabha or Parliament’s lower House till 2 pm.

Stormy start to Parliament over Adani, Rahul remarks

Defence minister Rajnath Singh and Leader of the Rajya Sabha and cabinet minister Piyush Goyal led the government’s offensive against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday, demanding his apology in Parliament for his remarks made overseas on Indian democracy and Parliament. The BJP’s calibrated attack countered the Opposition’s plan to protest over rising prices and push for a joint parliamentary committee to investigate the Adani-Hindenburg issue. Read more.

A message from The Elephant Whisperers

Animal babies ooze irresistible cuteness. Baby elephants are adorable. And an orphaned baby animal can trigger a flood of emotions. Look no further than Kartiki Gonsalves’ heart-warming directorial debut, The Elephant Whisperers. This Oscar-winning short documentary is an evocative tale of a bond between an orphaned baby elephant and an aged caregiver couple in an elephant camp run by the forest department in Tamil Nadu. The short documentary won an Oscar the week after three elephants in the state’s Dharmapuri district were electrocuted. In a video posted on social media, two calves were seen standing next to the departed mother and aunts, refusing to leave the place of the accident. Read more.

Couple featured in ‘Elephant Whisperers’ yet to see Oscar-winning film

Mahout Bomman was out to rescue two baby elephants deep inside a forest in Tamil Nadu’s Dharmapuri when “Elephant Whisperers” based on the bond he and his wife Bellie developed for the injured baby elephant Raghu they looked after won India a second Oscar on Sunday.

The documentary shows the couple’s care for Raghu after it gets separated from its herd in Tamil Nadu’s Mudumalai. It won the Oscar in the best documentary short film category. Naatu Naatu from the Telugu film RRR become the first Indian film song to win an Oscar. Read more.
